As it Lays

As it Lays is three-channel video installation that suspends the teen actress in the very unreality of the theatrical stage.  Two channels are a visual reference to cinematic, but the scenes established are stagnant. The actresses occupy the frame in total stillness disarming the viewer with their subtle breath, sleeping beauties. 

The featuring of young actresses enables an examination of becoming woman.  Their performing of an adult femininity is confused by the formative nature of their identity, they are still affected by the intake of specifically codified images of ideality in popular culture.  They are splayed for the camera like pinned butterflies, isolating performativity versus their natural selves, and articulating the awkwardness of the adult dialogue.
